Established in 1952 and located in L'Aquila, the University is a public teaching and research institution offering a full range of academic programmes including biotechnologies, sciences, economics, engineering, education, humanities, medicine, psychology, and sport sciences.
The Department of Industrial and Information Engineering and Economics (DIIIE) at L’Aquila University was established in 2012 with the support of teaching and non-teaching staff from the following departments: Chemistry, Chemistry and Materials Engineering, Economics, Information and Electrical Engineering, Mechanical, Energetic and managerial Engineering. DIIIE also hosts a PhD in Industrial and Information Engineering and Economics. Research activities focus on, but are not limited to, Energy and environmental systems, Industrial Engineering, Information and Economics. Within the UnifHY prohect, in particular the laboratory of Chemical Reaction Engineering and Fluidization Dynamics (CRE&FD) at L’Aquila, connected with the nearby biomass gasification facility in Teramo, is active in fluidized bed biomass gasification research since about 20 years. Projects at lab and pilot scale have been carried out at International level, funded by the European Union (JOR3-CT95-0037; JOR3-CT97-0196; ENK5-CT2000-00314) and bilateral Organizations. This group is also member of permanent research networks on "biomass for energy" and "sustainable development" (ARCUS, GDRI, ICTP/TRIL; CIRBE); in the recent FP7 UNIQUE project, UNIVAQ, the coordinator, has performed numerous tasks in collaboration with associated laboratories at "Sapienza", University of Rome (Mechanical Engineering Department) and University of Teramo (Food Science Department). Thus different subject areas relevant to this project have been cultivated and developed actively, at the level of both theoretical and experimental research investigations and professional activities (industrial contracts). In particular, the main areas of expertise are: catalytic biomass steam gasification; design of chemical and energy plants; fluid-dynamic behaviour of fluidized bed chemical reactors, under high temperature and pressure conditions; CFD simulation of fluidized bed equipment and heterogeneous reaction systems.
A bench-scale fluidized-bed rig is available in Teramo, able to operate at steady-state up to 900°C, which will be utilized for experimental investigations included in the work programme of this project.

1. scientific coordination of the whole project (WP 1)
2. continuous steam gasification and hydrogen purification tests (WP 2);
3. analysis of results of the test campaign (WP 4).
4. analysis of results of the CFD simulation of the UNIfHY prototype and the simulation of entire process (WP 6).
